Earning the General Billy Mitchell Award is one of the most significant milestones in a Civil Air Patrol cadet’s career. It marks the transition from Cadet Enlisted to Cadet Officer (Cadet Second Lieutenant) and unlocks incredible benefits like eligibility for the Air Force Academy, E-3 enlistment rank, and selection for national cadet special activities.
1. Understand the Exam Structure
The Mitchell Award examination consists of two 50-question comprehensive tests: 100% of Leadership (Learn to Lead Vol 1 & 2) and Aerospace Dimensions (Modules 1–6). Both exams are 60-minute timed tests administered online.
2. Master the Leadership Core Concepts
Don’t just memorize definitions. The Mitchell Award leadership test emphasizes situational leadership, drill command responsibilities, and core CAP values. Focus heavily on Chapters 4 & 5 of Learn to Lead Volume 2.
